New MIT Center for Human & Global Ethics

The Dalai Lama officially opened The Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology yesterday. The goal of the center is to promote ethical behavior, moral purpose, and responsibility in future leaders, with an emphasis on globalization.
"The majority of the 6 billion people on earth, I think, we can categorize as nonbelievers," the Dalai Lama said. "So we must find a way to promote ethics and values with these nonbelievers. ... We need promotion of secular ethics through education."
The center will be directed by the Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi, MIT's Buddhist chaplain. It will be housed under the school's Office of Religious Life, but will rely on individual donors for support. —Heather Wax

I wish the new Institute every success in its commendable mission.
However, as to "We need promotion of secular ethics through education"
I fear secular or any ethics is generally and can be promoted, not through education, teaching, and preaching, but through examples set by parents, elders, and other one respects, and through the qualities of kindness, caring, and compassion that one absorbs by seeing the associated attitudes and behavior all around, rather than through books, lectures, and sermons.
Ultimately, there is only enlightened ethics, which can be both secular and religious or neither.
